We learn from this Scripture passage that God disciplines his precious children. Good parents discipline their children so they will grow into mature adults. We can be afraid of discipline if we grew up with harsh parents who excessively punished us, or we can rebel against discipline if our parents were permissive so we didn't learn discipline. But God is our perfect Heavenly Father who we can trust! God can work in our lives through good times and bad times so we grow more like Christ. God can even redeem our painful experiences to minister to other people. So come ready to be encouraged by God's tender love and challenged to grow through our heavenly Father's loving discipline.

We're studying the Book of Hebrews to explore why Jesus is greater than anything the world could offer and worthy or our worship. Life is like running a long distance race. Sometimes we feel in stride with the wind at our back and coasting downhill. Other times we feel like dropping out as we gasp for breath running uphill with painful injuries and the finish line looks so far away. In Hebrews 12:1-3 we're called to persevere through the marathon of faith by looking at Christ's example and keeping our eyes on the prize when we cross the finish line, with wisdom how to remain faithful throughout the race.

Imagine if we faced persecution with possible arrest, prison, property confiscated, social humiliation, family rejection, etc. Would we deny our faith and blend into society or honor God regardless of risks? Now think about when we are tempted. Do we deny our faith and give in to the moment or honor God? Do we have faith to trust God, even when temptations feel so seductive, or life seems disappointing, or we don't get immediate results, or God's promises seem so far away? Hebrews 11 is a “faith hall of fame” with examples of real-life people who lived by faith, even though they faced trials and temptations, and didn't always receive what they hoped for in this life. God commends them for their faith and gives them great eternal reward. We'll learn from their lives and explore how to trust God in good times and bad times.

Sometime people's faith in our world is tested through temptation from sins, persecution from oppressive governments, violence from religious extremists, rejection by family or friends, and more. This month churches around the world are joining in the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church to raise awareness of persecution and intercede for our suffering brothers and sisters around the world. The church community who received the letter of Hebrews were experiencing painful persecution and tempted to lose their faith and go back to their old lives. We'll study God's message to them, and for our lives today, in Hebrews 10:32-39 to learn how we can faithfully honor God through our suffering and care for those who are hurting.

We're studying the book of Hebrews to learn why Jesus is worthy of our worship and the salvation he offers is greater than anything the world could offer. Jesus presented to God the Father the supreme sacrifice on the cross. What did this accomplish? How did this atone for our sins? What difference can this make in our lives? The author explains two themes to help us understand: Redemption and Ransom. The word “redemption” is translated from “lutrosin” in the book of Hebrews which meant a slave redeemed out of slavery into freedom. We've been redeemed out of slavery to sin and into freedom to love God and live the joy of our salvation! What was the cost? Christ paid the ransom to set us free! Come ready to receive God's love and go deeper into Christ's redemption that can transform our lives. We'll take Communion together this Sunday.

    Supreme Covenant
    Series: Greater Than
Jesus Christ inaugurated a new covenant between God and humanity! The Old Covenant was designed by God to reveal God's character to the world, show humanity our need for redemption as we realize how far short we fall from God's holy character, and point to salvation in Messiah's perfect sacrifice. When Jesus completed his mission on earth, the purpose of the old covenant was fulfilled and the new covenant was poured out. The author of Hebrews reminds God's people how superior the new covenant is by quoting Jeremiah 31:31-34 to show the difference between the old covenant written on stone and the new covenant written on people's hearts. Three times God says “I will” to reveal the glory of the new covenant:  “I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts” … “I will be their God and they will be my people” … “I will forgive their wickedness and remember their sins no more.” Come ready to leave behind external religion and guilty hearts to the new covenant of inward transformation in Christ.

    Series: Greater Than
We are studying the Book of Hebrews to learn why Jesus is greater than anything the world could ever offer and worthy of our worship. Nothing in life is guaranteed. People live and die. Nations rise and fall. Economies prosper and decline. Clothing looks good and then wears out or becomes outdated. Appliances work for a while but wear out (often right after the warrantee expires). This Sunday we'll explore why our salvation is guaranteed, and God's presence throughout our lives is certain, because Jesus Christ was appointed by God as a permanent priest, forgiving our sins and inviting us into the presence of God forever. God's character never changes so God never changes his covenant or defaults on his promises!

    Series: Greater Than
Throughout history people in every culture around the world have asked: “How can we get to God?” How can we bridge the gap between imperfect people and a holy God? We need a perfect priest to stand in the gap! The word “priest” in the Bible comes from the word ἱερός which means “bridge” between God and people. Jesus Christ is our Supreme Priest! Jesus stands in the gap, like a bridge between God and people, because he can sympathize with our human weakness since he fully experienced human suffering, while Jesus can stand before the Father as our advocate since he made the perfect sacrifice our sins. The author of Hebrews explains the qualification of Jesus as our Supreme Priest and the freedom we have to come before God at the “throne of grace” to receive forgiveness and find strength to live for God.

Do you ever wonder if following Christ is worth it? How do you honor God in temptations? What is your motivation to live your faith in the tough times? The author of Hebrews sent a sermon to a Christian community 2,000 years ago who were tempted to give up their faith and go back to their old lives. Hebrews is a masterful message defining who Jesus is and describing why Christ is greater than anything the world could ever offer. This fall we're studying the rich theology and practical wisdom of the Book of Hebrews to explore why Christ is supreme above everything and worthy of our worship. This Sunday we'll explore the urgent warning to listen when God speaks rather than harden our heart by ignoring God or yielding to temptations. May our minds be open to God's Word and our hearts humble to obey the Lord
