Supreme Grace

In our lives, we may have heard the phrase “I’ll make it up to you.” Often we’ll say that when we owe someone a favor, or we failed to keep a promise. Have you ever said those words to God? Have you ever said, “Dear Jesus, I’ll make it up to you. I promise!” to the Savior?  Hebrews 10 shows us how this dynamic of wanting to “make it up” to God works in our lives.

Supreme Redemption

We're studying the book of Hebrews to learn why Jesus is worthy of our worship and the salvation he offers is greater than anything the world could offer. Jesus presented to God the Father the supreme sacrifice on the cross. What did this accomplish? How did this atone for our sins? What difference can this make in our lives? The author explains two themes to help us understand: Redemption and Ransom. The word “redemption” is translated from “lutrosin” in the book of

Supreme Covenant

Jesus Christ inaugurated a new covenant between God and humanity! The Old Covenant was designed by God to reveal God's character to the world, show humanity our need for redemption as we realize how far short we fall from God's holy character, and point to salvation in Messiah's perfect sacrifice. When Jesus completed his mission on earth, the purpose of the old covenant was fulfilled and the new covenant was poured out. The author of Hebrews reminds God's people how superior the

Supreme Guarantee

We are studying the Book of Hebrews to learn why Jesus is greater than anything the world could ever offer and worthy of our worship. Nothing in life is guaranteed. People live and die. Nations rise and fall. Economies prosper and decline. Clothing looks good and then wears out or becomes outdated. Appliances work for a while but wear out (often right after the warrantee expires). This

Supreme Hope

Sometimes the Christian life is described as a journey, or a walk, or a race; all terms implying forward momentum.  Why is it, then, that so often we see Christians living lives of spiritual neutral, idling by and not growing or transforming? Why can we sometimes feel defeated or on the edge of our ability to stay steadfast in our beliefs? Hebrews 6 offers an encouragement, and a firm warning, about spiritual growth and life beyond the basics. Ultimately, what is our hope for transformation, and how can we own it in our lives today?

Supreme Priest

Throughout history people in every culture around the world have asked: “How can we get to God?” How can we bridge the gap between imperfect people and a holy God? We need a perfect priest to stand in the gap! The word “priest” in the Bible comes from the word ἱερός which means “bridge” between God and people. Jesus Christ is our Supreme Priest! Jesus stands in the gap, like a bridge between God and people, because he can sympathize with our human weakne

Supreme Warning

Do you ever wonder if following Christ is worth it? How do you honor God in temptations? What is your motivation to live your faith in the tough times? The author of Hebrews sent a sermon to a Christian community 2,000 years ago who were tempted to give up their faith and go back to their old lives. Hebrews is a masterful message defining who Jesus is and describing why Christ is greater than anything the world could ever offer. This fall we're studying the rich theology and practical wisdom

Supreme Sacrifice

Sometimes God can feel far away. When we feel ashamed of our sin. During a confusing crisis. In the midst of temptations. While we wrestle with doubts. This was the experience for many people in the community that received the sermon called “Hebrews” we are studying. The first chapter explains how God has spoken to everyone who will listen in every generation with the message of Christ's great salvation. Now the second chapter explores how Christ has made this great salvation possible. We'll learn how much Christ sacrificed to leave the glory of heaven, become human, share life with humanity, suffer on the cross, and the profound difference this can make in our lives.

Supreme Salvation

When we ignore warnings bad things happen! Chest pains could indicate a heart attack. Fire alarms ring out to alert us about a possible fire. Engine lights warn us our car might break down at any moment. Ignoring these and other warnings can be dangerous or deadly. When we ignore God's warnings we risk drifting away from God with devastating consequences. The author of Hebrews reminds the recipients of this sermon that God speaks in every generation and whatever circumstances in the first ch

Supreme Savior

What can we do when we're tempted to give up our faith or compromise our values because of doubts, temptations, or suffering? Remember who Jesus is and what Christ has done for us!  The author of Hebrews jumps right in, opening this sermon with a masterful theological statement, explaining why Christ is worth our faithfulness because: The Son of God is supreme over all creation, the agent of creating the world, the exact reflection of God in the world, the perfect word from God to humanity,
