People come to the Amherst area from around the world for education and jobs. For many of these people and their families learning English helps with daily life and opens doors of opportunity. First Baptist has been offering free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to the public for fifteen years. This year 73 students from 26 countries are participating. Classes meet at the church on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.
Four skills are developed: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Small class sizes enable tutors to work with students individually. Our curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students at different English levels: beginning, intermediate, advanced.
Our team of tutors are highly motivated volunteers who help students learn English, get adjusted to life in the USA, and successfully integrate into our local community. Students who are interested in learning about the Christian faith have opportunities to ask spiritual questions, come to international dinners, attend Discover Christianity classes, and participate in the church.
For information about ESL or if you want to learn about volunteering, contact the church office at 549-3596 or office@fbcamherst.org. Evie Hopkins is our ESL Director.
